Lehmann Engineering, Inc. is extremely proud to be the Structural Engineer of Record for the renovation of this unique facility. The Scobee Challenger Learning Center will be merged with the San Antonio College Observatory and Planetarium to create a one of a kind learning opportunity for all ages. Challenger Learning Centers offer realistic mock-ups of a Mission Control and an orbiting space station. Students join teams at computer consoles or onboard the orbiting space lab, rev up their imaginations, and work together toward the mission’s goal, whether it is the launching of a probe or the interception of a comet.
The facility consists of a new learning center, gift shop, and star gazing deck. The existing planetarium is being remodeled and the existing telescope relocated within the facility. The structural system is a creative combination of structural steel and cast in place concrete that incorporates the existing thin shell concrete dome.
Lehmann’s work on educational projects like the San Antonio College Scobee Education Center Planetarium, the Josh Davis Natatorium, and Brooks Academy of Science and Engineering are great representations of their commitment to balance and problem solving. With engineering projects of this size, strong capabilities in how buildings function along with design capabilities and working for the balance of the community’s safety and historical preservation are paramount. Lehmann Engineering is humbled to have played a part in building the history and landscape that shapes San Antonio.
